Creating a Twitter Account
Let’s say you are brand new to the real-time stream and want to get started. One of the best places is with Twitter. You can sign up for a Twitter account for free and start tweeting friends and followers. You can work directly in the web-site to post your tweets or use an application such as Twhirl, Seismic Desktop or TweetDeck.
Twitter runs on a system of micro-blogging and quick communication. A tweet is limited to 140 characters and you have four main ways to direct your tweet. The first is just to throw your content out there, type your message and presto! You are a part of the real-time stream! You can type @ in front of a person’s Twitter username and your comment will be logged as a reply. Other people may see and reply to your micro-conversation as well, this is how social networks are formed. The third method is with a direct message, marked with a “d” which are private and not visible to other Twitter members who follow you. The final method is a “re-tweet.” If someone says something you like or find interesting re-tweet it (signified with “RT”)! This is a great way to pass on a message you like to your own group of followers.
